AUGUST 18 PRIMARY RESULT BREAKDOWN
FLORIDA:
-The big news of the night is Alexander Vindman losing the Democrat Primary for US Senate to a DSA candidate, despite having a 15:1 money advantage.
-Byron Donalds underperformed bigly, only getting 48% of the vote despite having a huge money advantage and Trump's endorsement. Baris said he thinks Donalds wins the general by a few points, but I think he could go down like Roy Moore (2017 AL Senate Special) if the sex scandals hit hard enough.
-Cory Mills lost renomination for FL-07, which gives Republicans a better chance in the general.
-Randy Fine sadly held on, but got Lindsey Graham margins with bad opposition candidates. He's definitely beatable in another cycle.
-Something under-reported is Republicans only out-voted Democrats by 11% in FL-27, a Miama based district represented by the most pro amnesty Republican in congress, Maria Salazar (she was renominated with 81% of the vote). She won by 15% in 2022 and 21% in 2024, though the district was redrawn since then. Unfortunately I think she'll still hold on, but this could be a surprise district given the demographics.
WYOMING:
-State Senator Eric Barlow destroyed Trump endorsed Megan Degenfelder by 15 points. This is the 5th gubernatorial candidate with Trump's endorsement to lose this cycle.
ALASKA:
-Mary Peltola utterly destroyed incumbent Dan Sullivan, 48% to 43%. Recall Alaska uses rank scam voting, and in the primary all candidates run with the top 4 advancing to the general. Democrats ran a spoiler candidate also named Dan Sullivan to confuse voters, but his vote share combined with the incumbent is 45%, giving Peltola a clear lead.
-The House at Large race went better for Republicans, with incumbent Nick Begich getting 46% of the vote. The Senate general could hurt down ballot though.
PENNSYLVANIA:
-There were no primaries in PA last night, but there was a special election for a state house seat in Bulter County where the first assassination attempt occurred. The Democrat won by 88 votes (0.5%) despite being a Trump +18 district in 2024. Expect Democrats to have a trifecta in all Great Lakes Rust Belt states (MI, MN, PA, and WI).
The percentage of registered voters who identify as Republican has fallen from ≈40% in November 2024 to ≈29% now as July comes to an end.
And no, it isn't a response bias.
In July 2024, Republicans held an identification edge over Democrats, 37.4% to 34.1%.
Why are Republicans losing identification?

Watch Quite Frankly and the Matt Gaetz Show tonight, folks!
The Gaetz interview was FIRE! I really think our pal Mark Levin is going to LOVE it. 😉
Frank and I are going down the Rabbit Hole at 7PM ET. I'll be on about 10-15 after.
I live in the district in Western PA where Dukes pulled off the upset.
This area didn’t get more Democratic overnight.
People didn’t vote.
I don’t think Trump and the GOP establishment have any idea how much people are pissed.
Dukes should have lost by 20 points.
I wrote a post reply a while back explaining the dynamics in this area. Two years ago, you’d find Trump signs all over the place. And they were permanent. Affixed to buildings, homes, etc.
They’re all gone.
I don’t think the GOP will recover for this. Not sure if Trump was always this way or his cognitive decline has something to do with this.
There needs to be a third party because neither party represents the voters of this district.
BTW, Timko was a terrible candidate.
Watching people attempt to "unskew" polls conducted by all walks of this industry—ranging from Nate Cohn at The New York Times to Spencer Kimball at Emerson College to Tim Malloy at Quinnipiac—all to deny Donald Trump's gains against Joe Biden with various voting blocs, is more than a little sad.
The slew of recent polls over two weeks—to include no less than four today alone—have simply confirmed prior findings published from other pollsters who have previously been "unskewed". That includes your's truly and our work at BIG DATA POLL, Mark Penn at Harvard University, Patrick Ruffini at Echelon Insights, and many others.
I'm temped to equate this with an Occam's razor-like situation. But this debate is more about likelihood than simplicity.
Here's the Presidential Vote Preference Trend for Biden v. Trump going back to August 2020. The Public Polling Project did not begin asking the Rematch Question for 2024 until September 2021. However, we can still make some pretty important and interesting observations.
